Top Rated Pet Insurance Companies (2026)

11 min read · Updated May 2026 · PawPrice Pet Guides

Spend an afternoon Googling "top rated pet insurance" and you'll notice something a little strange. The same five companies show up in the same order on every single site. Different logos. Same list. That's not a coincidence. Most of those rankings are paid placements dressed up as editorial content, and the companies at the top are there because they pay to be there, not because their customers are the happiest.

So we did something different.

We looked at independent customer review data from platforms where companies can't buy their way to the top. We looked at claims satisfaction specifically, not just overall ratings, because a 4.8 from someone who filed a $150 claim tells you nothing. What tells you something is how a company handles the $9,000 diagnosis. The surgery that costs more than most people's monthly take-home. That's the real test.

Here's what we found.

How we ranked these: Customer satisfaction score (35%), claims processing speed (25%), coverage value per dollar (25%), and complaint resolution rate (15%). All data from independent review sources. No sponsored placements here.

#1
Healthy Paws
Best Overall
9.1
out of 10

Healthy Paws earns the top spot on nearly every independent customer satisfaction survey. And it's not close. Their unlimited lifetime coverage, 2 to 4 day claims turnaround, and clean one-option plan design generates more unprompted word-of-mouth recommendations than any other provider in the industry. People who've actually needed it for something serious, a $15,000 cancer diagnosis or a complicated surgery, tend to become loud advocates for it afterward. That pattern is the most reliable signal in this whole category.

Best for: Any dog or cat owner who wants serious coverage for serious illness, especially high-risk breeds where a big claim is genuinely likely.
#2
Trupanion
Best for Chronic Conditions
8.9
out of 10

Trupanion's per-condition deductible means you pay it once per diagnosis and they cover 90% of that condition forever, no annual resets. Add direct vet payment at over 9,000 clinics and you've got a product that earns devoted customers, particularly among owners of German Shepherds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Goldens, and other breeds where recurring conditions are practically a rite of passage. Their customer satisfaction scores drop slightly compared to Healthy Paws mainly on price, not on coverage or claims experience.

#3
Lemonade
Best for Low-Risk Breeds
8.6
out of 10

Lemonade earns their rankings almost entirely on two things: price and app experience. For straightforward claims under a few hundred dollars, their AI processes and pays within minutes. Not hours. Minutes. That's genuinely different from the rest of the industry, and their prices for young, healthy, low-risk breeds are the most competitive in the market. Where they fall back in the rankings is the annual coverage caps, which can fall short for high-risk breeds facing a major illness. But for the right pet, they're excellent.

#4
Embrace
Best for Wellness Coverage
8.3
out of 10

Embrace doesn't get as much press as the top three but they've earned a loyal following with a feature nobody else has matched: their Healthy Pet Deductible drops your annual deductible by $50 for every year you don't file a claim. Five clean years and your deductible is $250 lower. Their wellness program also reimburses routine care dollar-for-dollar with no copays, which works out better in practice than most wellness add-ons do. Customer satisfaction is solid, claims handling is well-regarded, and the pricing sits comfortably in the mid-range.

#5
Pets Best
Best Budget Pick
8.0
out of 10

Pets Best is the move if you want genuinely comprehensive coverage at a price that doesn't sting every month. They offer annual limits up to unlimited on their highest tier, which separates them from most budget providers who cap out at $5,000 or $10,000. Customer satisfaction is solid if not exceptional, claims take 5 to 10 business days, and their 24/7 vet helpline is a genuinely useful addition for the middle-of-the-night moments when you're not sure whether something warrants an emergency visit.

The single biggest factor in getting value from any top-rated plan is enrolling early, before your first significant vet visit, when your pet has a clean record and zero exclusions

What the Ratings Miss

Here's something nobody in pet insurance comparison writes about. A 4.8 star average built mostly from people who filed small, easy claims tells you almost nothing useful.

What actually matters is how companies handle the hard ones. The $12,000 cancer surgery. The chronic condition that needs treatment every year for the rest of the dog's life. The case where an adjuster could find a reason to deny if they really wanted to.

Healthy Paws and Trupanion sit at the top because their track records on big, complex claims are consistently good. Their customers who've been through the worst-case scenario come out recommending them. That's the signal worth paying attention to.

The companies further down the list often get decent reviews overall. But dig into the negative ones and you'll notice a pattern. They're fine for routine claims. It's when the numbers get large that the friction starts showing up.

The One Decision That Matters More Than Which Company You Pick

Enroll before your first significant vet visit. Before any symptoms develop. Before anything gets written into a medical record.

Every single company on this list excludes pre-existing conditions without exception. A Golden Retriever enrolled at 8 weeks with a blank record is covered for everything that develops after that point, including the cancer that statistically hits 60% of the breed. That same dog enrolled at 4 years with a couple of vet visits on record gets those visits scrutinised before the first claim is processed.

Timing beats company selection every time. And no rating system captures that.

The Quick Decision Guide

High-risk breed? French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog? Go Healthy Paws or Trupanion. The unlimited coverage is doing real work for these breeds. A $10,000 annual cap evaporates in one bad year with a Frenchie.

Young, healthy, low-risk breed? Lemonade or Pets Best. Solid accident and illness coverage without overpaying for unlimited benefits that statistically aren't needed.

Want routine wellness included? Embrace. Their add-on pays back better than the competition's version in most cases.

And if you want the detailed head-to-head between the top two, we've written a full Trupanion vs Healthy Paws breakdown and a Lemonade vs Healthy Paws comparison that go a lot deeper than we can here.
